Cairns 2
We had already booked a barrier reef trip for next day which would take us out to the outer and reputedly, more superior reef. 7am start for the boat trip that would take us to 2 reef destinations. A little 'splashy' on the way out with everyone eventually opting to stay inside with most accepting anti-sickness medication!
Got to the first snorkelling spot, Michaelmas Cay which is a sandbar really and inhabited by thousands of birds! As it is a protected area we could only access a cornered off area.
Tom decided to have a go at scuba diving and following instruction, donned the full diving gear(so very handsome he looked) and ready for his first dive was told to jump off the back of the boat whereby he promptly swallowed a jug of the ocean! He had a good go for a while but it really is difficult to scuba dive and cough/choke at the same time! However now has the bug so determined to have another dive another time!
Sue went off snorkelling and Tom joined later - unfortunately the waters remain a little cloudy following the recent cyclone but got to see some colourful marine life and coral before getting on board for the next stop. Along the way we were rewarded with the sighting of sea turtles……yeah!!
The next spot; 'Hastings Reef' seemed clearer and we had a great snorkel. Returned to the boat for lunch and went on deck for the return to port, a 34km journey over 90 mins. Sue particularly glad to be back on terra firma and we had an early dinner before flaking out!
