DAY 1
We managed to drag ourselves out of bed at 5.30am eventhough i reckon we were still drunk! There were about 20 or so people on the trip, some English, some Irish, some Welsh, and some German. Our guide Leifth was mental...absolutely mental. He just called everyone by their nationality for the first day as he couldn't remeber our names. My name was Brummie! It took us about 4 hours to get anywhere near the Rock so we had a well deserved sleep on the bus. When we weren't asleep it was amazing to see the landscape out the window. Its amazingly red, dry and flat. Really beautiful.
Our first stop was at a barren patch of land that Leifth had decided would be our bed for the night. It was literally a patch of land, in the middle of the Australian outback! We stopped off to collect firewood so that we didnt have to do it in the dark. I think everyone thought he was joking at first!
Next stop was the Aboriginal Cultural centre where we learnt about aboriginal culture believe it or not! We then drove to ayres Rock.. It was amazing to see in real life. Not really what it looks like in the pictures. not as red and the rock is not as smooth. The hard bit was walking around the base of the rock. Eventhough it was flat all the way round (9km) it was about 40 degrees. PLus the water we had was heating up so we were drinking warm water. Not the nicest! Some people in our griup wanted to climb the rock but it was closed for climbing as it was too hot. leifth told us some stories of how many people have died climbing the rock either through pure exhaustion or from being blown off the top by the wind. i decided against it! We were also told not to pick up any rock as souvenir as loads of people had done it in the past and had apparently been cursed ever since and had even sent the rock back in the post!
Leifth drove us to a nice lookout where we could watch the sunset with the rock in the background. There were lots of other tours there. most of them day trips and most of them much more expensive than ours as they were watching the sunset with a glass of champagne and we were watching it with a glass of goon! hahaha! Leifth cooked us a pasta dinner which we ate watching the sunset too which was nice. He then drove us to our "campsite" and we settled down under the stars in our swags. We built a fire to keep the bugs and deadly snakes away! Im surprise I managed to sleep but the 2 of us were knocked out from a long day.
To be continued......
