So we picked up the "Hippie Camper" up on the 14th September and have had a lot of fun exploring the eastern side of Australia. Making our way between Sydney and Melbourne. The first couple of nights we were in Sydney and we went into the city to have a look at the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and both were fantastic to see! We also took a drive to Bondi Beach and although we didnt see any rescues (which to be honest I was hoping we would) the beach itself is pretty nice with many tanned, fit people strutting theirselves up and down the beach (Tom thought the guys were showing off but was quite happy seeing all the women in bikinis, I on the other hand had the opposite opinion)!
We then decided to make our way down to Melbourne. It was a 10 hour drive without any stops. We decided that would be too long especially as Tom would be doing all the driving so we made a stop in Cooma which is the town leading onto the snowy mountains. It was very cold that night but the drive through the mountains the next morning was spectacular and there was REAL snow. Crazy!!
When in Melbourne the very nice Tony Vance (plays football with Tom for those who don't know) let us stay with him as the caravan parks were full as there was a show going on that weekend (trust us to head down there the one weekend they had a show going on)!! So it was a nice change to be able to stand up instead of crouching and being able to cook inside was also a nice change (well for Tom anyway)!! Whilst in Melbourne we did the Neighbours Tour which was really cool. As you can see from the photos Tom was excited to be there. However in the evening we did go and see an Aussie Rules game at the MCG so he was happy! The Stadium was fantastic and absolutely massive. We had a good evening and I think I may have started to learn some of the rules by the end of it (or not)!
Next stop was Phillip Island which was a suggestion from Tony and I'm so glad we went because it was fab and personally I think people should come to Australia just because of those penguins! We went to the Penguin Parade and sat on the decking area (which only was allowed a certain amount of people) and saw the worlds smallest penguins, the only penguins which are blue and white, come out of the sea and waddle up the beach. They were so cute. I did wander about taking one but I think I might have got arrested!
After departing Phillip Island we started our drive to Jervis Bay, stopping in Wangaratta and Goulburn before arriving at the bay which was beautiful and was where we did Whale Watching. We saw loads of dolphins and saw 4 humpback whales which were massive but so elegant in the water. It was a fantastic thing to see! The water was pretty rough but us islanders were fine!
We then took a quick stop at Fitzroy falls (an 80m waterfall) the views looking out to the waterfall were beautiful and a nice place to stop for a break before heading to Shell Harbour in Wollongong to stay for the night.
From Wollongong we headed to Katoomba up in the blue mountains. We took the skytrain from one mountain to the next with a deadly drop (not that we were testing fate or anything). We saw the three sisters and again the views just took your breath away! On the way back over on the skytrain we stood in the middle where the floor was glass and you could see the drop below you. It was a bit freaky!
The last four nights we have been in Sydney and have done the Bridge climb on the Harbour Bridge. They kit you out in some highly unattractive overalls which would make Victoria Beckham look fat so the rest of us had no chance, top that with a harness, a fleece, a hat and your good to go. You are fixed to a wire which goes up to the highest point on the bridge. It was quite hard work but worth it as you get an amazing view of the opera house and the city! As your not allowed to take your cameras up the guide took photos of you up there so you'll have to wait till we're home to see those!
Tonight (02 October) is our last night with the Hippie Camper and we will be sad to see her go. Tomorrow we are in a hotel before catching our flight on saturday at 8.50am! Hope you enjoy the photos!
