This was Tom's last hope of a decent wave before we travel North. With the benefit of many hopeful entreaties, the weather decided to play ball and delivered up two almost cloudless, light offshore days with a swell of 3-4 foot at Pondalowie Bay. My, but the sea was cold!
The surf is in Innes National Park which housed a thriving centre of Gypsum production back in the 1900's. Not much left of that infrastructure now- but I am sure the tourism is huge in the warmer months.
We scored a mini lock in at the local tavern to watch NSW get pipped by a point in the deciding State of Origin. The publican was a nice bloke about our age who had done a similar trip with his two daughters 4 years ago and had nothing but good news about their educational outcomes upon their return. Unfortunately, I had one too many Shiraz and ended up a sick puppy overnight. Been a long time since that's happened and I'm not real keen for a replay, I can tell you!
The Yorke itself is a spectacular mix of rolling green fields and mallee scrub leading to the limestone white beaches and glorious turquoise sea. It has cliffs which reminded me very much of Cornwall, mainly I guess because being a Peninsula, we got to watch the sun go down over the sea. We have seen pods of dolphins arcing across the bay, emus scatting through the mallee and a plethora of hawks and falcons carrying off their hapless rodent dinners. I am personally keen to get to warmer weather, but it's been a lovely few days. Next stop the Clare Valley.
