Today we traveled back to Buenos Aires after a weekend at Punta del Diablo on the Uruguayan coast.Punta del Diablo is a little coastal town between Montevideo and the Brazilian border.Fishing is the community's primary economic driver but the warm summer days lure many Uruguayans to cabanas along the beach. However, sunbathers still have to share the beach with the fishing boats pulled up on shore. The gradual rise from the beach is speckled with little more than fishing sheds and cabanas. The roads are all dirt and the shoreline has remained refreshingly underdeveloped given its natural beauty, fine sand beach and charm.
Christina and I considered this tranquil setting and experience as one rejuvenating stage in a long journey. The sun, time and mental space for reading, relaxing, and simply being was wonderful.
I wrote the following poem while sitting on our balcony overlooking the ocean.
Parrots pass with a flash of brilliant green
A varied roar the waves forever sing
Fine sand underfoot and salt upon the lips
Ocean's reign revealed
Experience with body and mind
Senses softly awakened
Thoughts reconceived against the endless blue.
Tonight we fly from Buenos Aires to Mexico City, where we will spend the day and following evening with Christina's cousin and her family. We will then head to San Diego for Todd's cousin's wedding before flying on to China.
As we prepare to leave Latin America, we have been fondly remembering all of our experiences - living in the Palermo Hollywood neighborhood, taking language classes with Agostina, and visiting the Tigre Delta, Iguazu Falls and finally Punta Del Diablo. We will certainly miss the Dulce de Leche (caramel sauce Argentines put on just about everything), ice cream, steaks, energizing Buenos Aires city life and incredible sites around South America, but we feel rested, completely back to good health and ready for our next adventure in China.
