After sleeping in a bit following a late night, our Couchsurfing host (Manuel) took us on a tour of the city centre. Having been to Vienna once before myself (about ten years ago) it brought back some memories walking down the Universitatsring, where many of the government buildings are situated. However, at least for Mari, she had never been there before so it was all new for her. Nearby there was the Volksgarten and the Heldenplatz, the large square where Adolf Hitler announced the formal annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938.
As we walked around the city, Manuel regularly called for us to stop and have a coffee. Seriously, the man drunk a ton of coffee, every two hours at least it seemed. This was fine with me, except for the fact that Viennese coffee is considerably more expensive than the coffee in most of the countries we had been in beforehand. However, Manuel also took us to a pretty fantastic ice-cream shop which was definitely worth it, one of the better creams I've had in a while. Like typical tourists, we visited Stephansplatz and of course the impressive St. Stephen's Cathedral, which I couldn't really remember clearly from the last time I visited. At least this time there was no poo issues in the cathedral, just tourist ones.
Eventually as the evening arrived, we headed to a large area next to the University of Vienna that was running a film festival. Admittedly, we didn't really watch any films (there would be some on but later in the night) but we ate food from some various stalls nearby and had a fair bit of beer as well. A very nice friend of Manuels, originally from France came to meet us and joined in the eating and drinking. After a few hours of this (and definitely a few Euros spent as well), we decided to call it a night so we could get up earlier and visit some other places we wanted to see the following day.
