Well after leaving RUssia and a 10 hour boarder crossing i finally arrived at Ulaanbaatar i guess a nice way of putting it would be to decribe mongolia's capital city would be as a down market version of Liskeard another way would just be to call it a s*** hole. trying to get over the notion that first impressions last. Ulaanbaatar is really the only city in Mongolia so all the s*** is all condensed into one small area also the mongolian don't seem to have any idea of litter and just throw all rubbish anywhere. That said the main square in the city Chinggis (Gengis) Khan square is actually very well done and the history museum was excellant. i was however disappointed to hear that Damdin Sukhbaatars (the kind of Lenin of mongolia) body has recently been removed from the square so i couldn't increase my list of embalmed communist leaders, oh well! after one day in the capital i got out into the countryside (which was full of litter of course). anyway the mongolian countryside was just magical i managed to stay in gers (nomadic tents) and the experiance was wonderful (the state of my bowls not quite so magical. i spent a week just experiancing the countryside visiting town where people ride into town on their hourse to do the wekly shop. by the time i headed back into Ulaanbaatar to catch a train into China i was leaving with a heavy heart.
