Day 2 of De' bar-zanzibar… I think his name is Ruckus, the driver I mean. He's nice! And always on time (so far) no Africa time on this island!
Didn't sleep very well this morning, the water seems to bash against the wall downstairs where the restaurant and beds are and at one point I am sure it rocked the hotel. We are only living in essentially a huge tree house.
The drive to Stone town was around 1 hour and a little bit, still not too sure about these "terrible roads" clearly I've experienced and travelled worse haha! The drive was pleasant and we got there in good time, we had a guided tour already sorted for us around the winding back streets of stone town, I am not sure I would do it again, there wasn't much history discussed and I would have gone into a few of the museums. But nevertheless he took us to the oldest coffee house in stone town and he supposedly took us to the best shops for souvenirs (I am just way too street wise for bulls*** and I'm a way better barter than them). Love a painting for 1/2 price, no white people prices for me thank you very much! Tourist with a street sense and no wool over the lids coming through, please and thank you!
Mohammed Number 2 is what our tour guide called himself, they're funny when they speak english they constantly say excuse me to get your attention or to start talking about something. Portuguese got everywhere in the 1700s didn't they! But to be fair they left some nice architecture! Stone town though, the name really speaks for itself! the man with the big mouth, extra teeth and great voice was born here. We stopped at his house but didn't go into the museum.
We did a little shopping, Jemma squirmed and died a little inside every time I tried to get the prices down of what I wanted to purchase. It rarely went in the vendor's favour and I saved a bomb! My foot is still bad from my back procedure and the walking around stone town has been a struggle especially with the floor underfoot being uneven. Powoli Powoli (slowly)!
Drive had sorted us out once again with a boat to prison island to see the old tortoises, they must laugh at us behind our backs, or the universe knows that I write a blog and need content haha!
Jambo! (Hello!) to Mr.Bean, our captain. Yup…. His name and his boat was Mr.Bean! The joker of the captains in the harbour I'm sure. But he did drop us off tidy and took us around the tiny island. The tortoises were roaming around and absolutely huge! Tanzania were gifted 4 of these many moons ago, now they have over 300! The babies are all in the little cornered off area because of course tourists cant be trusted, especially the idiots that feel its necessary to try and straddle one and sit on it like a horse, the poor guy he's 185 years old and has an millennial trying to ride him like a horse. I wonder what he was thinking! You always get some dickheads that ruin the experience for you for being unethical, rude or not environmentally friendly.
Mr.Bean was teaching us some Swahili on the boat, safe to say I cant remember it all. But it was a good day! It had gone fast, Jemma had her 3AED (60P) coconut for the journey home and back to Jambiani we went.
We tried to shower but the electric was out so no water or power, therefore the only thing to do was to drink beer and play cards, after a while we then went back up to shower and then went to the sister hotel about 15Ms away and had a BBQ and African dancing night, that was fun! Until the electric board had other ideas and went to sleep for a few minutes, when we say pitch black… I mean it was pitch black!! First thing I did was grab my bag, not that I don't trust people but I am not getting stung!
The dancing was a bit weird with them making funny fronting noises and jumping up and down in a circle, banging their sticks on the ground and trying to keep their blankets wrapped over their shoulder. Didn't look or sound too bad after a few rums haha, rum after rum after rum….it was fresh with coconut water and i don't feel like you really get a hangover on holidays. We had a fairly early night as we were up early for dolphin chasing!
