Thursday 14 February
Remember when you where at school and you had to do those horrible spelling tests at the end of the week and all the ways you had to help you remember how to spell the words correctly, i. before e. except after c and all those?? Well, one of those little sayings came back to me today and it helps me to be able to spell correctly the state where we are tonight; Mrs M, Mrs I, Mrs SSI, Mrs SSI, Mrs PPI - remember it? Good biking back roads again today travelling through tiny towns like Pollock, Trout and Dry Prong which had hand written signs at the side of the road advertising crawfish and jumbo shrimp. We are really in the deep south now!
We pulled up at a gas station in Natchez and somebody saw us on the bike and asked us if we were from Germany, probably because we are on a BMW (and this has happened quite a few times). But we politely say we are from New Zealand. What I feel like saying is "Why? Are you from Detroit?" or "nein, ich wohne im Neu Zeeland, wo wohnst du?"

As Natchez takes it's name from the Indian tribe who made it their home in the early 1700s, we pay a visit to the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. It is mainly a site of ceremonial mounds which don't really look like anything important today but were of great importance to the Natchez Indians. "Downtown" Natchez appears to be smaller than we thought on investigation so it doesn't really take long to see the highlights. Dinner is definitely a highlight though as we get to sample the seafood that Miss-Lou is so famous for - catfish, shrimp, crabs legs, gumbo and ettouffe.

Unfortunately, we wake to a pretty bad storm so decide to hold out in Natchez until it passes. We are in the Deep South, so these things have to be expected.
