For us Uyuni was a place without boundaries. We can look at this from a few different angles.
Firstly, the natural beauty that is the Salar de Uyuni (aka the salt flats of Uyuni). This not-so-little marvel is mind blowing and definitely plays games with your senses. Imagine a perfectly-flat desert; but instead of dust/sand/dirt we have pure white salt clustered into honeycomb patterns as far as the eye can see. The horizon disappears into the reflection of the salar, and your brain struggles to make sense of what youre seeing without the usual reference point of the horizon. Luckily for us we were here between seasons which meant we not only got to experience the dry firm flat ground but also the wet crysalised salt granules and tremendous reflection that leaves mountains floating in the distance. It's a photographer's dream. A group of Aussie got their kits off (topless, mooning etc.) in an attempt to get a truly unique Salar photo. As I said, a place without boundaries.
Secondly, on our Salar trip we made friends with a whole bunch of Argentinians. On our second day most of our time was spent hanging out in the Main square with all our belongings waiting for buses for onward travel. Now Marc, sick as a dog (actually the homeless dogs looked healthier), normally has boundaries on what is and is not socially appropriate. But being horrendously ill with altitude sickness helped him get overwhelmed by the desire to power spew over the chair in front of everyone. Meanwhile only metres away; our new-made friends are cutting each other's hair, two are juggling, braclets are being made. No one shudders or turns up their nose; they just look over asks if he's feeling ok and continue about their business. And encourage him to chew on more coca leaves (which we later found our to be the natural precursor to cocaine!). The only exception to this was a couple of Asian tourists across the park who had face masks on in a jiffy and were looking at our sorry group with contempt and disdain. I feel that we have achieved a breakthrough and those boundaries Marc started with are crumbling down! :)
Finally- Truco! A traditional Argentinian card game somewhat similar I guess to Poker. While Marc was "resting" I was busy getting the upperhand in this newly aquired game. The Argentineans taught me the basics, and I was away! Deception, bluffing and deceit were my way to the top. There were no boundaries; there were no limits when it came to my competitive desire to win this game. And win I did. They never saw me coming.
