Our flight landed in Da Nang about lunch time, the attendant at the tourism information booth made us aware of the imminent typhoon Nari on its way as well as booking us a taxi.
We shared a taxi to Hoi An with a young English girl and together we trawled the streets in search of a good deal, it was the kind of weather cows lie down in, light rain and a very still wind interspersed with sudden violet gushes. We needed to find shelter a storm was coming! Within minutes a moped pulled up beside us and we were greeted by a friendly smiling face, our new friend guided us to a local hotel. At $15 a room with breakie included, swimming pool, wifi, tv, hot water etc. etc. it as easily the best hotel we'd stayed in to date and a sign of good times to come.
As per routine our bags were quickly abandoned in our room and we made our way just down the street to a inviting and atmospheric place called Cafe 43, the sign for 3000 dong (9p) fresh beer may have had a slight influence on our decision to dine there, however, it was clear to see that Cafe 43 was the place to be in town. An incredibly warm and friendly staff seated us alongside dozens of ravenous and thirsty tourists. The menus, tables and walls were covered with hand written recommendations from long gone travellers and their passport pictures sat with their scrawls as an identity parade of criminal eaters. With every table full to the brim the competition on either side and across stood forlorn in empty restaurants dreaming of only a slice of 43's pie. We were soon along with everyone else tucking into the delicious local delicacies, Cau Lau, White Rose, Stuffed Squid, they even did a mean 28" pizza! Delicious!!!
