Having approached and landed in Bali along one of the more picturesque flight paths we have experienced we made our way to the infamous Kuta, and found ourselves in New Arena Hotel right in the heart of the action. Straight to bed for a long rest, The following day Emily had her last rabies shot and a blood test only to be told that her liver was still inflamed and she would have to continue to lay of the booze, luckily hallucinogenic mushrooms were available on every street corner! (joke). Dry January was inevitable, up to Martin to once again heroically take up the slack! After getting to know Kuta we decided an upgrade was in order and we found a lovely Guest House which had a pool and included breakfast all for the small sum of £3.50 each. We settled in to our new home fake DVDs and all and felt spoilt. Our appreciation of this luxury led us to forgo most of the less interesting cultural side of Bali and enjoy some well earned relaxation, movies, dips in the pool and good food were how the next few days were spent.
An evening of live music and casual drinking led to the orchestrated and badly received pickpocketing of Martin's well worn in iPhone. A disastrous turn of events that was made only slightly sweeter by the very recent backup that was performed with the addition of the macbook to our travel gear. Phew! If only we had searched the b***** at the time as Martin had the little s*** by both hands!!!!! Feeling thoroughly pissed off we decided it was time to move on and we planned our next adventure to the Gili Islands. We searched high and low the following day for an iPhone but alas nothing that didn't look like a Chinese knock off was available so we settled for a showing of American Hustle at the local cinema. Due to bad weather the government had cancelled all fast boats to the Gili Islands so the only way was to fly. Keeping in tune with recent events Martin woke up feeling awful and flying was out of the question. We were both hoping and praying it wasn't the dreaded dengue. A few bed ridden days later and after a lot of rest we arrived in Bali's Neighbouring island Lombok and had a nights rest at the port before a morning cargo "ferry" to Gili Trawangan the largest of the 3 Gili islands. The wonderful sense of great things to come that gives you anticipatory goosebumps when approaching the invasion of a tropical paradise for several days of white sand beaches, cocktails and scuba had us all excited.
