The Simple Life
Please note there is a 2nd Koh Phagnan and Kuala Lumpur postcard entry before this one! If you're interested.......
The bus journey from KL to Singapore was another interesting experience. The bus was quite luxurious and the driver safe enough but it was all the customs procedures that threw us. We were bundled off the bus at passport control at the Malaysian border. Luckily found our bus again and settled down for our first sight of Singapore. Less than 10 minutes later we were unceremoniously dumped in the middle of the motorway, told to get our backpacks and were pointed in a random direction. This turned out to be Singapore immagration. After queueing for a bit we got to the desk only to be turned back and asked to fill out entry cards. They were not too impressed with Lyndsay's effort in a pink pen! Not liking to make things easy for ourselves we then decided to take a few photos and were surronded by irate customs officers. Well how were we to know it was a government building and no photos were allowed. Not a good start to Singapore! Thinking we were on our ownsome we were surprised to find the bus driver waiting for us ready to take us on the next part of our journey. Again 10 minutes later we were dumped at a bus station with no money and no clue. We managed to change our malaysian money to singapore dollars, jump in a taxi BUT had no idea where the hostel was! We knew the name and somehow figured that would be enough for the taxi driver. Eh no, he needed an address. Very nice man he turned out to be, we gave him the hostel phone number, he phoned got the address and chatted to us our whole journey. Just like London cabbies eh?!?!
Dreading the dormitory we were pleasantly surprised. It was welcoming, clean and friendly. As it was after 9pm and we'd spent the majority of the day travelling we headed out for a quick bite to eat, checked our emails (free internet access in the hostel!) and headed to our bunkbeds giggling like schoolgirls. It was ok for one night, not sure if we could handle it for longer. Shared bathrooms and bedrooms not for us darlings......... The hostel experience itself is good and homely but we'd def opt for a private bedroom with ensuite everytime.
Refreshed this morning we headed into the heart of Singapore on the MRT, not unlike the jubilee line. We felt slightly nostalgic for our old Canary Wharf days. The city was just as we imagined - very clean, colonial yet modern. Took in a couple of shopping centres but felt the best way to see the city was on an open top bus tour. Feeling intellectual we choose the heritage route as opposed to the city route. It was most informative and we got to see the old Singapore (little India, Chinatown, Raffles Hotel) along with some of the spectacular architecture of the new city.
Really wanted to do the boat trip down the river but knowing we have an all nighter ahead of us we decided to return to the hostel and relax whilst we had the opportunity.
Well here we are now updating the site. Hope you enjoy!
Can't believe after all our daydreams with Skippy when she was in London, all our months of chat about Oz we finally arrive there tomorrow. Yippee........ We're so excited (clap, clap, clap)
See ya down under xxx
