Ah, now we are in Bali!
Unfortunately, however, the day we flew to Bali was the day the 'Bali Bombers' were executed. Probably not the most sensible thing we've done, as the British Consulate website at present is strongly advising against any non-essential travel to Bali because of the expected backlash and further potential bombings in popular tourist areas as a result of the executions. To say I was a bit stressed at the airport is an understatement! Luckily Lindsey was very understanding and told me to pull myself together and stop being a girl!
But we're still in one piece and all is good. We decided as a start we would avoid the most popular tourist area (Kuta, where the 2 previous bombings took place) in favour of Sanur on the east coast. The weather here at the moment is seriously hot (even Lindsey is struggling with it!). To be honest, its a bit boring as it's essentially a resort for old people. It's very unusual these days for me to be one of the youngest people in a bar, but that was the case here.Talking of bars, lots of cheesy expats hang outs with time withered classics such as 'White Room' and 'Stairway to Heaven' being played by Balinese cover bands - classic!
Anyway, we're now in Ubud which is a lot more traditional and very much more the way you would percieve Bali to be. It seems a very nice place, with lots of art galleries, and culturally interesting things going on. This is our first day here though, so at present we are just recovering from a VERY hot bus journey from Sanur (i.e. lounging by the pool - life is very hard ;) ). We're doing a Balinese cooking course on friday which should be great, and Lin is talking about getting some pampering in the form of a massage. All is very chilled out and calm.....
