The next stop on the road south was the larger town of Lakes Entrance and our first destination in the state of Victoria. As soon as we arrived in this town we knew we were going to like it as it had a real buzz about it and was full of life. The town is build alongside the river and a pedestrian bridge across the river takes you to the towns lovely beach. We arrived around lunchtime and after grabbing a quick bite to eat we went in search of the hostel we were booked into for 2 nights. After checking in we headed to the beach for a cooling dip in the ocean and a relaxing afternoon reading our books on the beach. By 6pm we were all sunned out so we headed to the supermarket for dinner supplies and then back to the hostel kitchen to wrestle with all the other travelers to use the 1 of 3 hobs that was actually working! After dinner we went for a walk around the town along the bank of the river and then to the town centre however we soon realised that whilst during the day the town is a hive of activity at night it is a very different story and was very quiet and almost like a ghost town. The next morning was sunny if a little windy so we headed to the beach and after having a nice walk along the beach we joined the masses to watch the king tide that had been battering the shoreline all morning. Over the last week the east coast of Australia had been encountering what are known as King Tides where the high tides are much larger than normal resulting in the water levels advancing much further up the beach than normal. The result is watching unsuspecting people lying on their towels relaxing getting absolutely soaked when the water almost washes them away! After being entertained for a good hour or so we then retired to our towels that were well out of the way of the rising water levels to chill out and read our books. By mid afternoon there was a change in the wind direction resulting in a sand storm that soon completely engulfed us and all our things so we packed up and headed back to the hostel to clean up before heading into town. After a quick wander around the shops we headed to an internet café to book up the next few nights accommodation as well as our eagerly awaited trip to the red centre!
