On leaving Townsville our next major destination was the seaside town of Airlie Beach however it was too far to drive in one day so we decided to have an overnight stay in the small town of Bown. Ordinarily I wouldn't mention such a small stopover in our blog however this place is of particular interest as it is where they filmed Nicole Kidmans latest film aptly named Australia! Even if we hadn't known that the town had recently been a Hollywood set we would soon have worked it out when the baker had Nicole's favourite cake, the seafood restaurant had Nicole and Keith's favourite dish and even the tourist tat shops had Nicole endorsed crap you could purchase for a reasonable fee! Unintentionally we had stumbled into Bowen on the night of the premier and the town was in a frenzy speculating about what celebrities may put in an appearance. Some of the local business men and women who had assisted during filming were invited and there was a general excitement in the air! When we arrived at the campsite they had also been hit with red carpet fever and invited us to their own premiere of another Australian film called The Castle. We spent the afternoon checking out the nearby beach before relaxing at the swimming pool and partaking in a bit of volleyball in the pool.. Unfortunately the synopsis for the film sounded decidedly average and as Australia is not really known for their epic films we watched a little bit before making our excuses and heading off to butcher a few sausages on the BBQ! The next morning we did a bit of investigating about the events of the previous night only to find that not one A list celeb put in an appearance on Bowens night of glamour so we weren't too annoyed that our invites got lost in the post.
