After the dive we were straight back to the hostel to collect our bags and then try to catch a local bus further round the coast to the capital city of Suva. We had heard from some other travelers on the islands that Suva was a bit dirty, rundown and the crime hovel of Fiji. It did make us wonder if we should go however we wanted to see some of Fiji so going there was just part of the experience! We only intended to stay for two nights so we decided to go anyway! We had to wait for about 40 minutes for the bus because as you would imagine they run on Fiji time so therefore cant be relied upon. The bus was a hoot, it was totally heaving when we got on and we were directed to the front seats where they sit three in a row and there was already a rather rotund Fijian woman taking up a little more than her fair share so I got in beside her and Mike had to perch one cheek on what was left! We considered ourselves pretty lucky as there was one man sitting on the gear box cover. It took about an hour to get there and we were entertained for half of that by a film playing on the on board tv/dvd combo. When we arrived in Suva we got a taxi to our hotel and were pleasantly surprised as it looked really dodgy from the outside but the rooms were actually really nice (by Fijian standards anyway). It was late afternoon by the time we arrived so there was not much time to look around before it got dark. Now the dark wouldn't have bothered us if we had not read the guide book which said "if you go out at night don't go alone and take a taxi directly to and from your destination", we were not about to find out why! Instead we went to the supermarket to get dinner supplies and then spent the night watching the Olympics on you guessed it, the only channel we had. The next day we spent the morning looking around the shops and Michael got a Fijian sevens rugby top for his upcoming birthday. We also had to go to McDonalds for lunch because I had seen an advert on TV where the workers wear red hawaiian shirts with the golden arches on them so we needed to see if it was true (and take a photo). We had a walk around some of the Fijian markets, took a look around the harbour and then finished the afternoon at the "legendary" hibiscus festival. We have no idea what its for but it was no T in the Park. They have lots of stalls selling questionable foods, some junk stalls and funfair rides. It didn't take long to walk round before it started to rain so we quickly made for the Village 6 cinema to watch a film called The Bank Job. By the time the film was over it was nearly getting dark so we thought "OH MY GOD" and quickly got dinner supplies and went back to the room for dinner and more Olympics. Having visited Suva we are glad we did it however we can agree with the common opinion that it is a bit dirty and not a true refection of Fijian life. As for the crime we kept our money close and our passports closer so that and the fact that we were never out after dark kept us free from any ciminal activities so we survived our 2 days in not so scary Suva.
