Day 209 - Barichara, Colombia - Saturday 12th May 2012
Cobbled streets, rows of white pristine houses, a lovely plaza in the middle of the town, little shops selling handmade handicrafts and the waft of freshly baked bread lingering through the streets - Barichara we have arrived! After wandering around for an hour or so and just taking in the town, we headed to a little place set in a gorgeous courtyard for lunch; it was Saturday and so the locals were out on mass, eating, chatting and generally having a good time. Everyone is so happy and smiley it's kind of contagious! We were the only gringos in there and attracted a bit of attention when, through my broken Spanish, I ordered the typical, local dish. I soon found out why - my lunch was a massive portion of three different types of meat, some bread and a pile of something which seemed to contain meat and something else. I then discovered that this pile was in fact goat cooked in its own intestines - interesting and tasty until you hit a bit of gristle! I made my way through as best I could and under the watchful eyes of everyone else in the restaurant - when I finally gave in the ladies at the next table repeatedly asked "gusto, gusto?" (like, like?) - "si, mi gusto por favour" came the answer. As we were finishing up the heavens opened and so armed with our paragus we headed straight back to the bus stop to head back to San Gil for our night bus to Santa Marta.
