Day 42: Litchfield National Park, Day 2
We had a little bit of a slow start this morning after Darren was up in the early hours of the morning with a headache and Micaela was up just before dawn with a touch of diarrhea, so a sleep in was needed by all. I got up and went to put a load of washing on before going back to bed. Brandon was up not long after I got back so I put a DVD on for the kids to watch in bed allowing Darren more of an opportunity to get rid of his head ache.
We were on our way by 9am, back to Litchfield National Park. Our first visit was to the Termite Mounds. These really have to be seen to be believed. They are masses of fire resistant ant nests that consist of all shapes and sizes. The biggest we saw today was over 5 metres. We saw quite a few in Kakadu also but Litchfield is famous for them.
After the termite mounds we proceeded to Florence Falls. There was a 700m walk down to the falls that detoured via a lookout of the falls. We once again enjoyed a swim in the natural rock hole with the kids and I swimming over to the falls. We remembered the surf mats today which helped the boys with their confidence of making it all the way across. Darren piked out as he thinks something bit him.
Swim time over we walked another 1km to continue the loop through Shady Creek Walk.
Our plan was to enjoy lunch at the picnic area near the carpark but there were no spots spare so we decided to drive to Wangi Falls picnic area.
We enjoyed our picnic lunch before going for another swim. The kids and I once again swam over to the waterfalls with Darren sitting this swim out.
By about 3pm it was time to go back to the van, we were all starting to get a bit tired. Even Brandon exited the water without complaint, although he was once again last in and last out.
A relaxing afternoon was had at the van. Micaela practiced her violin whilst the boys ate an ice-block. I laid outside in my really comfy chair and read my book whilst Darren had a sleep.
Tomorrow we are leaving Batchelor for Mataranka. We have another couple of days of big drives ahead. Not looking forward to lower temperatures, I've enjoyed the constant 33 degree temps we've had!
