Bula everybody (thats hello in Fijian). We've just arrived back in our hostel after 4 mega fantastic days on Robinson Crusoe Island. Its a tiny little island just off the mainland with one resort on it. We were officially initiated as Islanders with a traditional Kava ceremony, the ceremony involves sitting around a big bowl, clapping your hands and occasionally being forced to drink something that resembles and tastes like muddy water. Lovely! The island was brilliant, the beaches were perfect, not quite white sands but close enough and the Fijians who ran the place were unbelievably friendly, the leader, "Ziggy" took a shine to Gem and invited her to his tent to try on some coconut jewellery, Phil put a stop to that straight away!!!! While we were on the Island we snorkelled (Gem caught a bright blue starfish), sunbathed and did a lot of kayaking (for those that are interested it was during the kayaking that Gem had her first temper tantrum. It was because the wind kept blowing her off course!!!) One of the highlights of our stay was a traditional Fijian fishing trip during which we waded about in neck deep water thrashing around with sticks to scare the fish, sounds stupid but it resulted in us catching 85 fish. Back on the Island we then scaled, gutted, barbequed and finally ate the fish. You wouldnt believe it but Gem actually gutted the fish!!!! We've got photos to prove it but unfortunately Fijian Internet wont allow us to put pics on our website. You'll have to wait until we get to NZ to see the evidence. For our last night on the island we decided to go night fishing, there were about 16 of us and we thought it would be a fitting end to a great little trip, how wrong we were. We climbed aboard and chugged off into the darkness at which point the wind picked up and the rain began to fall. We proceeded to sit there in total darkness with a little reel of fishing line draped over the side of the boat for 2 and a half hours, it was freezing not to mention bumpy. Surprisingly it was Phil, not Gem who was doing all the complaining and he let the rest of the guys know that he was less than happy, a big sulk followed! Gem nearly caught a couple of things but they kept getting away (so she says), Phil however had no such luck, during the whole trip all he managed to do was get his line stuck on the coral reef twice and he then capped off the evening by somehow managing to get the hook stuck in his hood and his arms tangled in the line. Everyone bar Phil foud this very amusing. Phil has now come to the conclusion that fishing is a hobby for people that have no friends. We're now planning our next island hopping adventure which we think will leave on Friday, we're having a brilliant time and have met some really amazing people (and some complete idiots). Hope everyone at home is ok. Keep sending the emails and filling up the messageboard, we really appreciate it. Ciao for now xxx
