6am wakeup call again!!!I thought this was supposed to be a holiday!We made our way to Rome with a stop at Assisi today. It's a 535k trip and with the driver having to stop every couple of hours it makes for a long journey.On the way to Assisi we passed through the beautiful Umbrian hills which were so green.The weather was perfect….nice and sunny but not too hot.St Francis, the patron saint of animals, was born in Assisi in 1182 and died in 1226.His tomb is in the basilica we visited today.The inside of the double basilica was wonderful with it's beautiful frescoes by Giotto, stained glass windows, stone alters and steps.We only had an hour here so didn't get time to explore the region surrounding the basilica.We hopped back on the bus again and arrived in Rome at 5pm where we stay for 2 nights.We chose not to do the optional dinner tonight as they usually get back quite late and it's an early start tomorrow.We ate in the restaurant at the hotel....fettuccini with mushrooms then tiramisu with a cappuccino….yummy!
