Today we did a lot. But thankfully we both slept for more than 9 hours after our 36 hour day.
We got under way slowly with a breakfast including French cheeses, coffee, fresh eggs, and other goodness.
Once we got organized we went drove to passendale museum. It had an even better recreated dugouts and trench system and lots of other great exhibits. From there we went to Tyne cot cemetery which is the biggest commonwealth cemetery in the world. It was quite large and contained about 22000 people.
From there we went to the brooding soldier memorial. This is where Canada defended against the first chemical warfare attack ever.
Then it was off to the langstead cemetery. A German cemetery which was much smaller and had mass graves no headstones. It was very dreary and drab.
We then went to Ieper and after a late lunch took in the in Flanders fields museum which was quite good. Then
Out to the site where in Flanders field was written. The hospital station was much smaller than I expected and we even noticed the grave of a 15 year old.
Then we went back to the market square to meet up with antoon. He was great fun we went to A pub drank a couple beers and talked for a bit more then an hour. I have been trying brewers yeast free beers since arriving in Belgium. Our geuze are 100x better than lambics. The lambic a are way too sweet. He told us about all kinds of stories about Belgium about wwi and other things.
We then went to the last post at Menin gate. They have been doing the remembrance ceremony every day since the 1920s. It was good and super crowded. After that we left Antoon and went for supper. We got two traditional Flemish dishes. Flemish stew and pigs cheeks. Both were amazingly good. Oh we also had fried cheese balls to start, they were amazing. It tasted vaguely like emental battered and fried. So good and just the right gory ness level.
Anyways we are back at the Airbnb now having a few Belgian chocolates we picked up with a grand cru wine I managed to grab at the grocery store. Yum yum. And we will soon be off to bed.
