Arrived in Montevideo yesterday after an 18 hour journey from Florianopolis. Weather was overcast, making the city (which on a sunny day I think would be great for sightseeing) very grotty. We are staying at Ukelele Hostel. When we arrived at 6.30 this morning our room was nt ready so we huddled in front of an open log fire and ate monkey nuts. I found a guitar with a frayed 'A' string but tuned it up and had a little play.
The Ukelele hostel building is an old colonnial place and has an air of transylvania about it. Charming with tall ceilings and a swimming pool thats gone green , creeky on the stairs and all in all a bit spooky.
We walked around the city and down to the port in the afternoon and the old city area is very quaint with palm trees and quirky shops but we have decided not to stay here long as the budget for South America is running low and it appears to be quite expensive here, so we are going to save a bit for red wine tours in Mendoza and a big fat juicy steak.
So we ve walked about and seen all the important bits but will be catching the ferry to Buenos Aires this afternoon.
