After breakfast in Samedan, we left for Klosters. We opted to use the train to shorten the drive. Once the car was loaded upon the train, we rode in the dark through a tunnel twenty kilometers long. Lining up behind other autos reminded me a bit of loading for the ferry in the Puget Sound region of the State of Washington. That was where the resemblance ended. The train car was only one car wide of course, and we had to stay in the vehicle. Good time for a cat nap.
On arriving at our Hotel Silvapina in the village of Klosters, I was delighted to discover a simple chalet style hotel. My room opened to a view of the surrounding mountains. Occasionally I watched a red Swiss train circle through the village with a satisfying click-clack on the rails and pass close by our hotel.
We took the Post Auto (bus) into town and stopped for lunch. I read on the menu Club Sandwich with Pommes Frites, and though different from the American club sandwich, I enjoyed it.
It was raining lightly, but we heard there was a local music festival happening. A half hour walk seemed a good way to breathe in the mountain air, walk off our lunch and take in the sights of local artwork stationed along the Landquart River path. At 59 francs each, we decided to pass the festival and climbed high above the festival site to a hotel located at the top of a very, v-e-r-y long hill. We were delighted as the traditional Swiss music drifted up to us. By this time, the sun was shining and we had stripped off our rain jackets. The alpine sun was heavenly.
It was time to head back, and we women opted to take the Post Auto back down to the village and our hotel. In the evening we enjoyed an equally delicious meal, as Annelies and I ordered the Älpler Makronen. If you guessed macaroni and cheese, you are both right and wrong. Right because it is pasta and cheese sauce. Wrong because this was a white sauce that tasted similar to our Alfredo sauce, the noodles were three times longer, and it was laced with chunks of bacon. It is served with a bowl of applesauce. Sated, we walked back to the hotel beneath a full moon casting moonbeams against the alpine slopes.
We woke to a clear blue morning. After a tasty breakfast buffet, included in the price of the room, we left for Zürich, and "home."
