A slightly delayed start after contact from home but we soon headed off to check out some of the old town area. Plans to purchase some breakfast supplies were hindered being a Sunday ... and later we realised actually a public holiday in Spain so hardly anything open. Rohan had a few sculptures to locate including one of Woody Allen (strange... he did achieve a film award here... and some of “Vicki, Christina Barcelona “ was filmed here) then we wandered on to a lovely massive park area called Campo San Francisco. Roh headed back while we explored the nearby old town - fabulous buildings, squares, cathedral and narrow cobblestone alleyways. Some architecture dates back to 9th and 10th centuries.... including the Foncalada Fountain we found last night.
A quick coffee and croissant before back to pack up, getting on the road again by about 11am.
First stop was after an hour and a half at the coastal spot of As Catedrais - rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A stunning place - incredible rock formations with a tiny beach only accessible at low tide. Lucky we timed it right and were able to sit on the beach and take it all in. Roh braved the icy cold water - after a lifeguard called him back from trying to venture further along the beach. We ventured on to other little beach areas and finally chose a tavern for lunch - food was good but long wait crazy! Needless to say we were later getting back on the road with still an hour and a half to drive to Santiago de Compostela.... plus petrol stop and our first and only toll for the day. Again, a beautifully scenic drive - mountainous but the motorways are incredible. Some farmlands, wind farms, some smaller villages but on the coastline larger centres with high density living.
Finally found our apartment for the night just outside the edge of the old town area. Spacious and comfy. Once Raym had found parking Roh had set up a YouTube highlights of the 2nd state of origin - go the Blues! So after a couple of beverages and some research (from Roh!) we walked into Town to a highly rated restaurant called “Codex” - for our first paella of the trip! And, it didn’t disappoint! Along with some peppers, tuna salad and squid we had a feast on our hands ! Delicious!
Raym and I walked our dinner off through some of the old town area before heading back to get some sleep.
