Despite feeling like it was time to formally move on from the busy streets of Kuta/Legian in Bali, we found ourselves back there for a few more days to finish off our surfing package, after putting it on pause earlier in the month when we got too tired. (Yes, too tired.) They should tell you that taking 5 days of surfing lessons in a row when you have only surfed once in your life before, is a silly, sily idea! So the kind surf school let us take a break, and we finished up our last lesson, and our 5 hours of free surf board rental that we accumulated. The waves during our few days were quite small, which disappointed Troy, but relieved Clare. We practiced being out in the "green waves", and hung out a bit with the surf school lessons so we could continue to get ideas of which waves to try and catch. The whole sport is so technical, and there is so much to learn about the activities of the sea - it has been a huge learning experience. The best thing about surfing is that even when you are still so bad at it, it is still fun enough that you can laugh your way through all the ridiculousness of your wipeouts, and have a great time. We know our surfing opportunities are, um, slightly limited living in the GTA, but hope that we might have a couple more chances before the end of our trip in southeast Asia.
We also finally got around to something non-surfing related in Bali, and took a taxi out to Tanah Lot - a shoreside Hindu temple on the west coast. When the tide is out, you can walk along the beach and take in some beautiful views of the temple. We discovered that Bali is actually quite tricky to get around if you don't ride a scooter or motorcycle, and are learning to leave lots of time to get around in taxis. And now we will continue to dive into the cultural side of Bali by getting away from the water, and travelling up to the town of Ubud.
