The Curious Adventures of Rob and Lee
Our flight to Sydney was a comfy if bumpy one, we passed through two
gulf streams which caught us off guard. B.U.M.P.Y.
We flew with Quantas for the first time and oh how the other half live,
gourmet meals, beers on flow, little sandwiches and ice reams as we went
along.....nice :)
One of the highlights of the flight was looking out of the window as we
were over the South Pole. Because of our flight route the sun never actually
set so most of the flight saw the plane with the curtains down. At one
point I thought I'd have a little peek outside and what a sight!! Sheets of
ice for as far as the eye could see. It was so clear as if we were looking
just a few feet away but we were miles up in the sky. The sheets of ice
were rippled with cracks some quite wide others like little veins running
off in different directions. We took some awesome pictures from the
plane window. The cracks in the ice really brought a visual to any
discussions about global warming. As you see the ice craters drifting
in the ocean you cant help but wonder how long they will last?
On arrival to Sydney our first thing to do was check for wifi to see if we
had become an uncle and aunt again and sure enough while we missed
a whole Monday in its entirety my bro and his fiancé Nat
welcomed our little nephew into the world and he's a cracker! Rob's
sister Georgina and Thomas had a beautiful little baby girl when we
were in the jungle, baby Amelia, and now little Cian had finally decided
to join us.
Our hostel was pretty central and we soon found our bearings around
Kings Cross. For the first two days we just chilled by the Opera House
and Sydney Bridge, the weather was pretty decent so we took advantage
of chilling out in the sun. We did make it to Taronga Zoo while we were
there, we took the boat to the entrance of the park which was pretty
cool, it was nice to get some pics of the bridge with a sea view. The zoo
itself was amazing, Taronga does a lot of conservation work and the
animals have huge enclosures which makes your trip so much more
enjoyable-no animals in couped up pens here! Unfortunately we had to
leave a little early the day we were there the weather had turned pretty
bad and it was so windy that the zoo had decided to close early. Luckily
Rob had talked me into bringing my coat that day :)
We enjoyed our few days chilling in Sydney and can totally see why
everyone who has been there loves it. It's a beautiful city even if it is
expensive and it will have to get a longer visiting the future.
From Sydney it was on to Singapore just for a few days before we
started our next leg. Singapore is stunning, the little we saw of it but
we leave from there at the end of September so we've scheduled an
extra few days in to see everything we missed. We stayed in a pretty
cool hostel called The Inn Crowd based in Little India. The sights and
smells of the surrounding streets were amazing but the weather took
its tole on us and slowed us right down (it also took its tole on my
hair- "Its the humidity"!!!!!!!) we met two cool guys at the Inn Crowd
Fintan and Stu, on our last night there the lads, ourselves and some of the
other travellers from the hostel decided to head out and made our way
to the Singapore Sky Bar with which looks out over the Sigapore Strait.
It was stunning -at $20 a beer it would want to be!
We booked ourselves on a bus to Kualar Lumpur from Singapore and
after staying just one night and filling up on hawker stall food we made
our way to the airport for our flight to Cambodia. The queues in the
airport were unbelievable so much so that with two and a half hours
before take off we barely made it in time. For the most part the K.L
airport is a mishmash of queues and checkpoints with no rhyme or
reason to how they work but we made our flight and all was well.
