Gotta Go . . .
This city, established in 973, certainly has lots of history but especially a lot to interest Americans because it played a big part in the Battle of the Bulge. General Patton is buried in the American Cemetery here along with over 5000 soldiers 101 of whom were unknowns. It was a solemn and impressive visit to this landmark. Humbling to see how well they maintain this shrine to their American allies. Our tour guide was the most interesting and well versed, Rene, who carried pictures he took with his box camera of the procession when Patton was buried. He had a photo of the caisson as well as the riderless horse. This was truly an amazing step back in time.
Rene also walked us through the central part of the city pointing out the government buildings and the office of Duke Henri.
Food has not really been a highlight of this trip but today's was quite good. Dwain had a pizza with canadian bacon and mozzarella while I had a salad of arugula, cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Amazing! Then we visited a chocolate shop where the delightful owner gave us a tour and overview of the process. One orders hot milk and chooses a spoon dipped in various flavors of chocolate that is then melted in the milk. It is served with a spoon or a 'pipe' and it is up to the participant how one chooses to eat it. Can you imagine? We didn't have hot chocolate but we did walk away with some of their liquour filled, double dipped truffles that are beyond divine!
We travel again in the morning, heading for Brussels and the conclusion of our trip. It's amazing how fast the days fly when we are on vacation.
