We were back on the road by 6:15am to continue our drive to Carnarvon Gorge. We arrived at Carnarvon Gorge around 9:30am to see the memorial and plane wreckage from Rogers grandfathers plane. We were lucky enough that the farmers from Rewan property (43,000 acre cattle farm) were working near the memorial so Roger went over to talk to them and they invited us up to their house. We drove up and they gave Roger a small part of the plane as a keepsake and they showed us some pictures of the property and told us what they knew about the crash and also some information on Rewan property (which they have owned for approx. 16 years. Prior to 1939 'Rewan' was owned by the QLD government to breed and raise police horses. There is information about this at the Police museum in QLD). The kids made themselves at home and were spoilt with chocolate biscuits and they collected an egg each from the chook pen.
We went back to the memorial and Roger went for a walk along the creek and found some more of the wreckage (which spread over 3 kms). We had lunch in then left the memorial around midday and continued our drive south.
The drive was slow as they are doing a lot of road work between Carnarvon Gorge and Roma so we were stopped at several sections. We also had to stop north of Roma to let 3 heders go past - the kids were excited to see these and it reminded them of Gilgandra.
Along our drive today we also saw the gas pipes which they are installing between Roma and Gladstone for the coal seam project. The pipes look a bit out of place in the middle of farming properties. The project is employing 12,000 people.
We stopped in Roma to do a quick shop at Woolworths and refuel and then we continued a further 65kms to the Fishing & Restocking Club Park in Surat which is where we are camping tonight. We didn't arrive until 5:45pm as we hadn't expected to travel so far. It is right on the river so Rog quickly set-up the kids new fishing rods (which we bought for them in Darwin but haven't had a chance to use yet) and they had a quick fish until it got too dark. There were lots of tears when it was time to go back to the caravan as they both wanted to keep fishing.
We went back to the caravan and cooked kangaroo for dinner and quickly got two tired kids ready for bed so the two tired parents could get ready for bed also.
