We got up nice and early this morning and headed into Memphis. We stopped by Elvis' place but he wasn't home, must have left the building. We thought about doing the tour but it was not open for another 1.5 hours, cost $15 for parking and $40 each to get in. We left Graceland and remembered seeing a tourist info place on the way in. We thought it would be nice to do a hike along the Mississippi river and the super friendly guy at the tourist centre gave us the info we needed to do exactly what we wanted to do. He gave us the directions to get there and they were very straight forward. We drove through some pretty nasty areas that one might refer to as "plight" while others might refer to it as "the heart of America." Don't worry mom we had the windows and doors locked up… "roll'em up" So we followed his directions right down to the start of the hike at the downtown tourist centre and as we pulled up to the entrance there was no way to get in. Instead we found that the road he told us to go on took us right out of Memphis completely. I guess he did not want us lurking around Memphis? We thought we should try and swing around and go back but once we crossed the Mississippi we thought, there's no going back… Onward and upward as they say.
Shortly after leaving Memphis we drove out of Tennessee and into Arkansas which we seem to have trouble saying properly. R-Kansas.Arkansas is a funny place with mostly mashed together names of other places. The name of the state is partly stolen from Arizona but mostly from Kansas. There is a place called Arkadelphia which I am sure is an Arkansas version of Philadelphia. There is also Texarkana which might be a Texan sized Arkansas style town? Anyway, back to the story. On our drive through Arkansas with the sun beating down on the dry, flat and straight roads, we came across a semi rolled onto its side in the ditch. It must have just happened as people were milling about looking surprised. The truck appeared to have hit another truck and then careened into the ditch. The truck in the ditch was a tanker truck full of some sort of liquid that I am sure was not milk. The tanker was mangled but did not seem to be leaking. We did not stick around long enough to find out. About a mile down the road from that wreck there was another tractor trailer in the ditch on its side. Again, the sun was beating on the dry, long, flat, wide and straight roadway. We did not start taking pictures of the wrecks until the 3rd wrecked semi, 5 miles past that one. We have pictures of 5 wrecked, toppled semi's making a total of 7 semi's, wrecked on sunny, dry, long, flat wide roads, in one state…in one afternoon. The moral of the story I guess, is don't drive Truck in Arkansas.
Funny thing happened today. We pulled in to a truck stop to get gas, pulled up to the pump and shut off the RV. Immediately we heard a strange noise coming from back in the kitchen area. I jumped up and ran to the back trying to figure out what was going on. I opened cupboards, looked under the sink, opened the microwave, smelled for gas, completely in a panic until Brigette pointed out that it was just water falling from the canopy of the gas station onto the roof of the RV... perhaps I am a little paranoid?
We are now hunkered down in a Walmart parking lot in Hope Arkansas, which is the birthplace of Former President Bill Clinton. Hope is the birthplace, not the Walmart parking lot. We have an RV full of groceries and are going to go search for some WiFI so we can start sharing this story with someone. If you are reading this right now, I guess that means we found Wifi. If you are not reading this right now, I don't know what that means.
