Hi Everyone
We're now in Phnom Penh!
We had 2 very busy days in Bangkok- we attacked the 15000 stall market on sunday- it was amazing and mind blowing and totally painfull to 2 very poor young ladies! But we rose to the challenge and loved every minute! he he We will definitely be revisiting it before heathrow calls.
We stupidly pulled and all nighterlast night as we left for the airpirt at 4am- so feeling a bit of a zombie right now! We arrived in Phnom Penh around 10ish and crashed out in our very nice budget hotel on the boulavard. It feels surprisingly European on this stretch- with lots of cafes and restaurants and bars- well up until about 6ish when all the street stalls and markets and tuk tuks arrive and all the children selling books and begging with no shoes or clothes appear.
We spent most of today walking about the city, which made me feel like i was back in Peru or Bolivia-its very hectic and busy and quite poor and run down in parts. The people are so lovely and friendly as always in Asia though. So we mooched round the city past Wats and the palace and Museum and all over to get a feel for the place.
It was actually a bit of a nack- they seem to have about 8 lanes of traffic over here going in both directions and no traffic lights so everyone just seems to merge at cross roads and weave in and out and us pedestrians just run and pray!! At one point we had a group of monks who stopped to watch and laugh at us attempting to cross the road- not very holy of them!! They are everywhere over here- shopping on bikes reading magazines- i don't know why i find it so surprising, but i love seeing them kicking about town like any other joe!
We're not in love with Phnom Penh thats for sure- but its always interesting to get into a new country and city. We're also really keen to get to the museum tomorro and the killing fields before we move on to Siem Reap to visit Angkor and the Wats before the home straight!
tasha
