25 Febraury 2009 (Streaky Bay)
We've made it to South Australia and the grey nomads are getting thicker by the kilometer! We hit the Nullabor in early February amid much excitement, thinking there was a quite a bit to see along the way….there's not.We re-named it Nullaboring after being stupefied by boredom - we did make it to the Cocklebiddy Cave which is one of the biggest underground cave and lake systems in the world - although all we saw was a gaping black hole.Eucla was a bit more interesting with some cliffs and beach driving to be done and some characters to chat to at the caravan park and then we had the excitement of crossing in to South Australia…..before being it by 300 kms of nothingness again.
We pulled in at Cactus Beach, about 20kms off the highway and set up camp here for a week. This place was just beautiful and we had a very relaxing week lounging in the sun, fishing and Nath finally got back in to the water for a surf after nearly a year off.We met some really nice people here and once again ran in to our mates Nic and Gerard who we spent Australia Day with in Esperance. After this we headed to Smoky Bay which is great if you like to fish…and that's about it.The caravan park was chocca's with oldies who go there for about 3 months a year and are up and about at sparrows fart yabbering away about fish and crabs etc. They were a great bunch though and fussed over Ruby endlessly.
So we are now in Streaky Bay and I want to live here!It is the most picturesque town with beautiful beaches, fantastic fishing and has a great pub - it's got everything! It has been majorly affected by the drought though and it is something you don't really comprehend until you see how dry and barren the farms are around here, they are really doing it tough.
We head further south toward Port Lincoln tomorrow and will start hot footing it over towards Cowra in New South Wales for Brownies wedding.Till then I will be thinking of you all as I watch another sunset with a cold one in my hand.Love the Birds. xxxxxx
