As we said goodbye to the Vineyards and turned onto R.M Williams Way, the landscape quickly changed to dry and arid and we witnessed first hand the effects of the drought on the region.
We had a pitstop at Jamestown (birthplace of R.M Willians) where we learnt he actually achieved way more his own brand of clothing.
As we drove on; the ever so changing landscape revealed what could only be The Flinders Ranges in all their beauty.
As we turned off to Hawker (the first main town of the Ranges) we had our first real wildlife encounter with a mob of Emus playing in the paddock.
We stopped off in Hawker to fuel up and get directions to our accomodation for the night- Mt Little Station (approx 17km out of Hawker.)
As we made our way down the long and dusty driveway we were in awe of the view in front of us. We briskly set up camp and were inundated with flies, before we headed off to explore the station. We walked down to the gorge, which was empty due to the drought so we turned around and headed back for Mt Little.
The sun was setting as we challenged Larry to his hardest job yet- the rocky and steep 4WD track to the summit. We made the top, and had 360 degree views of the station and the surrounding ranges....breathtaking! Something exciting also happened at the top (more later!) The sun was quickly setting as we made our way back down the mountain but Tristan still found enough light to take more and more photos! Camp that night was our first semi free camping experience..... If we thought the flies were bad, the Moths, bugs, locusts and anything else that was attracted to light was probably worse. Lets just say Tara didn't get much sleep that night..... Excitement or paranoia, who knows.
The next morning we realised that the 3 way fridge in Judy just wasn't cutting it and the bugs/ flies were driving us nuts. We decided to move on.
Wilpena Pound here we come.
After a stop in Hawker to tell the world of our exciting news (still to come), we headed for Wilpena.... the heart of the Flinders Ranges. A magical spot with views in every direction and and many beautiful hikes and walks.
A very special thankyou to Mt Little Station for providing the perfect backdrop and to the Flinders Ranges for unforgettable memories.
