To paraphrase as they say here "For you Tommy, the trip is over." We leave the boat here and start from here next year.
Fehmarn is effectively a German holiday island now linked to the mainland by a bridge and has one other trick up its sleeve in that the main railway from Berlin to Copenhagen passes through it thus providing excellent travel connections to two international airports and so a really good place to leave a boat.
Even more fun if you are flying from Copenhagen - you get on the train in Fehmarn, it moves 200 mtrs on to a sea ferry all in one piece with you inside it, there is a half hour sea crossing when you wander the decks looking at navigational buoys wondering what the are, you get back into the train which stands alongside cars and lorries and it pulls off into the Danish countryside.
The professionalism of the harbour staff who look after your boat lift out is very reassuring, they have been doing it for years and even with the language difference it all went smoothly leaving us rather amazed. The boat sits on a metal frame and is supported at the keel and with four steel props. This in turn is carried and managed by a purpose built hydraulic road trailer beast which deposits the boat and frame to its Winter quarters after a wash down or whatever needs doing.
There are many vast sheds for boat storage, some are used in Summer for grain storage but most are purpose built for boats or car storage if you arrive by car. All incredibly well organised, easy and friendly.
The town of Burg is a short bike ride from the harbour and is delightful. Quaint buildings, lots of useful shops, icecreams beyond description and we found an outstanding exhibition of superb prints from copper plate engraving - a hugely talented living artist.
Our journey home was straightforward but long due to the usual need to wait an hour here and there for connections or aiport security albeit some of that was in England.
As I said at the top, the show is over - until next year when we push farther East and North.
