Hello everyone!
This is our final blog entry as we are now home in the UK - and if we've not already seen you, we will be soon.
It has been a surreal last few weeks for us, as we left Disneyland and the next day we were paddling through the Peruvian rainforest! On our first night we went on a night walk through the jungle, with just a mini-maglite to spot the millions of critters and creepy crawlies. Like Australia, most things here can kill you, and our guide even told us to tuck our socks into our trousers. Yoinks!
But it was an incredible place. We saw red howler monkeys, the world's largest rodent the capybara, macaws, toucans, mini-crocs caimans, tarantulas, leaf-cutter ants and a two-toed sloth.
After the rainforest we flew to Cuzco, a great city at about 4000m above sea level and the centre for the Inca empire. From here we saw lots of Spanish churches (mostly built with Inca stone) and some incredible ruins that have somehow survived the colonisation and plenty of earthquakes.
Our next stop was Machu Pichu, via more ruins in the Sacred Valley, high in the mountains. Wow. We climbed Machu Pichhu Mountain and hiked up to the famous Sun Gate and this was possibly the highlight of our trip.
In Peru we also travelled to Lake Titicaca in the south, flew over the Nazca lines on the coast, and experienced the Peruvian independence day in Lima. For the thrillseekers in us we also went white-water rafting on the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley.
Before we had plucked up the courage to eat the local cuisine (Guinea Pig boiled and burnt whole!) we were on our way back to the USA - this time for the ultimate culture shock. Las Vegas.
This is a silly place. But absolutely amazing. We met up with Matt and Megan who showed us around this ridiculous town. Every hotel was themed and had some kind of novelty to get you distracted while you lost dollar after dollar on the roulette tables. The hotels included the Venetian (A larger than life replica of Venice, with indoor gondola rides), New York New York (with a statue of liberty, recreated NY streets, and of course, an indoor rollercoaster), the Stratosphere (with a theme park on the roof 100 stories above the strip) and the Mirage (with an indoor rainforest, dolphin pool and white tiger enclosure). We've not even mentioned the exploding volcano, the pirate ships, the eiffel tower and arc d'triumphe, the Bellagio fountains or the trapeze artists!
We spent a lot of time (and money) in Vegas, playing the casinos, seeing an incredible Cirque du soliel show called O, and drinking! A perfect way to end our adventure.
It has been an incredbile few months, but it is time to come back to reality. It has been great to see so many of you the last couple of days and we're looking forward to seeing the rest of you really soon. Thank you for all your messages while we were away, they made us feel like we were never that far away from home.
Tim and Amanda
