We were greeted at the airport by a bank of trycycles. The local tuk tuk for getting around. This one was a weird one though a kind of motorbike, sidecar, boat mish mash. The bike had a housing welded to it that had a roof. Seats enough for about 5 Filipinos or 2 westerners! But from the outside the fibreglass structure looks like a boat cabin. So strange & not very comfortable! I think at the most we saw 10 people inside one, it was hilarious!
We had a couple of days mooching around Puerto with the main aim to withdraw all the Peso's we would need as our next town El Nido has no ATM's.
We took a firefly watching trip one evening & that was pretty cool. After dinner we drove through an open prison to the river & some mangroves. Onto a canoe for a nice relaxing float on the river watching the fireflies in the trees/bushes. It really was like a real life Xmas tree as they flashed alternately. Until you shone a red light near them. Then they flashed in unison for warning! There were hundreds. As lovely as the fireflies were the stars. The sky was amazing as the canoe man also pointed out constellations and planets with a laser pen we have no doubt could have bought down planes! .It was so very peaceful & the guide on the drive there was lovely too!
We strolled down to the harbour and was greeted by an enormous Xmas tree up. They were gearing up for a big Xmas concert on the 24th. The next day was a 6 hour ride to El Nido.
We were picked up & taken to the bus station. The minivan was there and we piled in. With 4 seats spare another 6 people with boxes & buggies piled in until we couldn't move for stuff! Periodically along the way we dropped some people off and took onboard some more. I think at one time we had 15 people with stuff in a 9 seater!!
We arrive safely in El Nido & pretty much fell out of the van! Glad for some space as we headed to the cottages we had booked.
