Arrived at Howard Springs Caravan Park, about 35kms south of Darwin, and were told that - even tho' we had booked online, there was only one site available (apparently we were "late" checking in). The site was very narrow and a van parked opposite made negotiating the backing extremely difficult however, John did a marvellous job and we set ourselves up for the next few days.
Next morning John had a Skype appointment with his specialist (all good) and after that we headed into Darwin to check the place out. After driving around aimlessly for a while we discovered the Museum and Art Gallery so decided to take the opportunity and have a look. It was great, free entry, very interesting displays including a lot devoted to Cyclone Tracy and some great aboriginal art. That filled our afternoon nicely, along with coffee and cake on the verandah overlooking the water.
We were very impressed with Darwin, it is very cosmopolitan and most of the city looks fresh and neat. Over the remainder of our stay we saw lots of memorabilia dealing with WW2 including the Military Museum and the RAAF museum. We also toured some old oil storage tunnels which had been constructed during the war, directly under the city! Fascinating. We had a good walk around the city and lunched on the wharf while watching one of the Navy Patrol vessels being re-supplied.
We caught up on our domestic chores, re-supplied ourselves with victuals and prepared to head out to Litchfield. We had enjoyed our stay very much and would have no hesitation in returning for another visit.
