After a lunch and supplies stop at Batchelor (location of the old Rum Jungle Uranium Mine) on the road out of Litchfield, we got underway again. The plan was to stop in at Adelaide River as a number of people had told us that the War Cemetery was well worth a visit. John decided that we would continue on a little way and find a place to camp, then go back to Adelaide River next morning!
As it turned out, we ended up at Daly River....about 100kms from Adelaide River so consequently, we didn't go back to see the War Cemetery!!!!!
John wanted to see the Daly River Crossing which apparently is an icon for 4wdrivers (yawn) so that's where we ended up. Stayed at campground of the pub, lots of the "local" residents hanging about and getting very loud. Went for a couple of drives to look around, quite a few crocs to be seen, plenty of fishermen but not much being caught it would seem. Not much to impress here!
Moved on from there to Douglas Hot Springs and had a very pleasant overnight camp, took a dip in the thermal spring fed river, super HOT, you had to find a spot where the hot water converged with the cold and then it was beautiful.
We had read that Butterfly Gorge was about 15kms down the track so decided to go for a drive after our swim. The road was a shocker and it took us about 45mins to get to the gorge.....but wait, there's more!!!! According to some people we spoke to, the walk into the gorge would take about 90mins return, was extremely steep and rocky, then add on whatever time was spent at the gorge once you had made it in. I was NOT keen, too many risk factors for my liking - not least of which being that we were the only ones there and by that time it was around 4pm - but John being John decided it would be fine so we headed off.
My advice to anyone who finds themselves tempted to visit Butterfly Gorge......DON'T !!!! We finally made it out safely then had to face the return drive to the campsite - it was well after dark when we got back to the van. To top it all off there was not a butterfly to be seen!!!!
Next morning we were still a bit weary so didn't head off too early for our next stop at Edith Falls, just north of Katherine. We booked in at the campsite, must have been our lucky day as the 'Camp Full' sign went up just afterwards. Another picturesque location with walks and plunge pool (very brisk) and even a little cafe. Had a swim, did a relatively easy walk to the top falls then spent a quiet evening. We needed it!!!
Back into Katherine for a few days. We had been having issues with our power supply so John wanted to try and find some parts for it, as well as a few other bits and pieces. Fortunately he was able to source what was needed from Darwin and it was freighted down overnight. Great service. Whilst in Katherine we tried out their thermal pool, quite pleasant but very crowded and not a large area. I guess we had been spoilt by the other places we had visited.
Having attended to all our chores and stocked up on supplies, we bade farewell to Katherine and turned our heads west towards WA and Kununurra.
