So. The first real day started off mighty early thanks in large part to a couple-drink induced early bedtime yesterday. And by mighty early I mean 3:30. Sus woke up shortly after and so we spent the first four hours of the day waiting for the rest of Dublin to wake up. Figuring 7:30 to be a respectable time for one to eat breakfast, we set off in search of it with our minds set on a little place a couple minutes walk that we spotted on the way in yesterday. Alas that was too early but we did spot a bakery across the road from it so we had a French breakfast of coffee and pastries.
Once the buses started at 9 we hopped on and made our way across town to a former Guinness family house that the government bought from them a couple of years that is open for visitors unless visiting Heads of State are staying there. We wandered the grounds and toured the house and then found a little food market and again went French and snacked on crepes. We walked through the neighboring Phoenix Park and then headed back downtown. Here Sus dragged me to Christ Church Cathedral and we sat around for the service to finish so she could find out it cost €6 to get in. That didn't happen. We shared a sandwich and milkshake at a diner before heading into the Chester Beatty library which had an exhibition on the art of books. Sounds lame but they had some fantastic examples of manuscripts, illustrated books and papyri(according to Sus this is what you call them), was pretty cool to see but no pictures allowed.
It was about this time when the jet lag set in for both of us. It had been a fairly long day for us and our internal clocks haven't really reset yet and we did a lot of walking. We couldn't pass up a stop at the museum of archaeology of course and wandered through an amazing collection of Irish jewelry and crosses, brooches and other fine metalworking. The workmanship was unreal and we did get pics from there though only on the camera.
As we left the museum the sky opened up and treated us to our first taste of Irish rain and we decided it was a sign that it was ok to regroup at our B and B and take a break before deciding what to do next. That takes us up to now and as I lay on the bed writing Sus is curled up beside me fighting to keep her eyes open while watching a terrible 80s Bond movie. All is well. Tomorrow we hire our car and start heading west so the next post will likely be from Westport. Slainte!
