As soon as we got on the plane I fell fast asleep - I seem to have perfected the art of sleeping anywhere since we came travelling! I woke up as we came into land again thinking we were heading for the sea instead of Bali's runway! Off the plane we collected our bags and headed out to get a taxi to Sanur - a quieter alternative to lively Kuta (Sanur is nicknamed 'snore' - Think we'll love it!).
25 minutes later we were dropped off on the main street and started the search for a room. A lot of places were full, some only had cold water showers (I wanted hot as we were going to be here a week or so!) and some were well out of our price range. We eventually wandered down one 'gang' and found a home stay that was more like a luxury hotel with air-con, towels, hot water, breakfast included and an outside seating area. We made a deal and took the room! Yay!
After settling in we went for a wander and immediately liked what we saw. Sanur is a smallish beach resort with enough to keep us busy but not too much so we couldn't relax :o). We had some brunch and found our way to the beach - rather difficult due to all the beach front hotels, there only seems to be one or two public entrances. The beach was lovely and quiet, a complete contrast to Kuta, there were barely any hawkers - bliss!
Back at the room we both enjoyed lovely hot showers before going out for some dinner. We chose a place serving Indonesian food and a nice atmosphere; it had live music and really friendly staff. I am enjoying feeling like I am on a proper beach holiday! Back at the room I couldn't even write my journal before falling asleep, it's been a tiring few days!
I enjoyed a lovely long sleep - I think 12 hours makes up for what I've missed over the past few days!? We sat on the veranda and ate our delicious breakfast before getting our bikini's on (even Neil!) and heading to the beach. We spent the day here, reading, talking, swimming, and relaxing - it was such a lovely day.
We came back to the room after a little too much sun, both of us sporting a lovely pink colour now. We chilled out before showering and going for dinner. We moseyed down the main street, looking at the shops, had some dinner and then came back to the room via the supermarket for some pudding. Today was a lovely chilled out, proper honeymoon, day :o).
It was a slightly uncomfortable night's sleep for us both due to our sunburn but we woke up and ate our delicious breakfast with gusto. After a shower we went out in search of Bali's oldest monument - the stone pillar. We followed the map in Lonely Planet for what seemed like ages, and wandered around in circles but never did find the blasted thing! It wasn't sign posted at all, and I felt sad they haven't looked after part of their heritage. Still we had a lovely tour of Sanur taking in all of the lovely houses and very grand door ways that lead off the gangs. We soon realised that we had been walking for over an hour and a half in the midday sun - not a good plan but something we always seem to end up doing!
We stopped at a café for a much needed drink and to use the Wi-Fi. I tried to book a hotel in Delhi will no luck, but successfully updated some banking, and more importantly caught up on facebook world! Neil also had an e-mail from a friend in Singapore who has offered us a room in his apartment for our stay which is incredibly kind! We enjoyed whiling away the afternoon at the café, both still a bit too pink for anymore sunbathing.
We moseyed back to our lodgings and spent a long time talking about our South America travels before going out for some dinner. It was my choice so I chose a little local place serving all sorts - it was so cheap and yummy! Back at the room, we snuggled in and read before turning the lights off. We really are having a real relaxing holiday!
It was another luscious lye in before another scrummy breakfast and we spent the morning lounging around, reading and doing travel research as we are both still a tiny bit pink so wanted to avoid the sun. At about 1pm (Missing the heat of the day today!) we went down to the beach and enjoyed strolling along the beachfront walk taking in all the beautiful views. It was so lovely and cool with the sea breeze; we stopped for a drink and ended up having fish and chips on the sea front - just like being at home - accept not at all!!
We had another leisurely afternoon back at the home stay before going back out for dinner. We went to the local night market but there wasn't too much food on offer. I did however pick up a striking green sarong with geckos on it to remind me of our time here. We found a little place to eat down a side street and because it wasn't on the main strip we paid literally half the normal price. After a delicious dinner we walked back to the home stay avoiding the 'taxi boss?', 'information sir?' and 'transport?' hawkers and then we tucked up for another early night.
We woke up to an overcast day which scuppered our beach day plans. We ate breakfast and chilled out at the room for a while before deciding to risk the beach. Even though it was over cast it was still warm so we got our bikinis on and set off. We had a lovely time relaxing until loads of dogs showed up. I have kind of gotten used to all the stay dogs while we have been travelling, and have avoided them, but one in particular took a liking to us and kept sitting on our towels. After we had moved a few times, and the dog followed us, I decided to give up and headed back to the room. I was glad we had because as we walked further down the beach there were even more dogs, but these were fighting and barking making me very anxious.
We picked up the laptop and went back to a bar with Wi-Fi. We sent some e-mails and happily booked a hotel in Delhi including an airport pick-up. We have talked a lot about India over the past few days and I am happy that a plan is forming.
We came back to the room and talked about life, and people views on it. We also talked about our travels and how proud we are of them. Also we questioned if we have changed as a result of our travelling and if people would notice a change in us when we get home. We discussed going home, how it would feel and when we thought it might be. One thing travelling together does is give you a lot of time to talk and to get to know each other - I feel like this is the best possible thing two newlyweds can do and I know that Neil and I are closer for the experiences we have shared :o).
I had a long hot shower and we headed out for dinner. We opted for something very local Nasi Campur for me and Nasi Goreng for Neil. Both were delicious and cheap! We are having such a lovely relaxing 'holiday' here, but I think we need to start planning our move to Ubud. Maybe tomorrow we can thing about that!
Yet another lazy morning - I really could get used to this :o). We waited at the home stay for a while for the sun to burn the few clouds away and then went to the beach. It was a lovely sunny day so we enjoyed lazing on the beach reading and chatting. There were no dogs in sight so I was happy!
Back at the home stay later on we saw the lady who works there laying out the offering and incense for the gods near the statue and praying. All homes and businesses have temple type pillar on the premises and there are these offerings all along the pavements and everywhere you walk. They are so colourful and pretty.
We did some more reading and I painted my nail (see a proper holiday!) before we showered off the sand and went out for dinner. We walked back to a cheapish place we had been to before and stuffed our faces for under a fiver - so much cheaper than the other holiday maker's restaurants! We took a slow walk back to the home stay and again reflected that it has been so lovely to stay here for a while, to unpack and relax!
We got up, had breakfast and headed for the beach like normal but only stayed for an hour or so as it was rather chilly with little sun today. On the way to the beach we had nipped in a shop to get an ice-cream. At the till the assistant started talking to us in Indonesian and it was only when he saw our confused faces he said 'Oh, I thought you were Indonesian!' - Maybe we have been here too long!
Seeing as it was a Sunday we treated ourselves to a Sunday dinner - our first Sunday dinner in 4 months! It was a little bit expensive and nowhere near as good as either of our mums BUT needs must and we really enjoyed it! After lunch we got changed at the home stay and then made the long walk to the local Perama office to try and book our ticket to Ubud. However when we got there we thought it didn't look much like a booking office, and rather dodgy, so we decided to go back to the main street and try and book something down there.
As it was a Sunday the beach was really busy with local families. There were people flying kites (a HUGE past time in Bali), swimming in the sea, building sandcastles and simply taking a stroll. It was a lovely if somewhat hectic atmosphere. We also saw an elderly lady with a huge bag on her head, I have no idea what was in it, but when she saw us she looked up, smiled and said 'hello', it was so sweet!
Back along the main street and a lot nearer to our home stay we booked a ticket for Ubud for Wednesday morning. The man in the booking office was really nice, not pushy at all, and even gave us a map for Ubud. We chilled at the home stay for a while until Neil's tummy started rumbling so we went out for some food. After filling ourselves up we went to a local bar to watch the tennis and use the internet. We were the last ones in the bar, and left before we wanted to really so they could close up! One of the disadvantages of being in a place called 'snore'!
It was a lovely sunny morning as we munched our way through breakfast. We took our laundry down and were just about to leave the home stay when the lady asked us when we would be checking out. There had been some confusion as we were originally planning on leaving today. We thought we might have to leave and find somewhere else as they were fully booked, but we were offered a room downstairs with 3 beds. Nowhere near as nice as our original room, but at least we didn't have to move far, so we packed our bags and dumped them in our new room.
After this we walked down to the beach and set up camp for the day. It was a glorious day with the sun shining all day long - in fact I am now a little pink again! Back at our new room, we showered and went out for dinner. Neil had picked a restaurant out of the Lonely Planet, which was in fact far further away than we had anticipated. The food was delicious and we reasoned that the walking won't do us any harm after lazing on the beach for a week! As we walked back to the main street something fell out of a tree narrowly missing my head. When I turned and looked at what it was I was shocked to see a frog! How bizarre! On the way back we looked at a few stalls, but didn't buy anything due to the pushy sellers. Fingers crossed my sunburn doesn't keep me awake tonight!
After a good night's sleep we woke up for our last day in Sanur. The weather was beautiful again but as we were both still a little 'sun kissed' from yesterday we decided to give the beach a miss. Its hard being sensible sometimes but we know we have to travel tomorrow, and carry our packs so being sunburnt is not an option! We instead walked the opposite way down the beach walk past all the really posh hotels, pools and sun loungers as well as the 'come look at my shop' and 'you want massage' ladies.
We sat in a warung on the beach and enjoyed a drink looking out to sea. It really was a hot day and the bright sunshine made the beach and sea look stunning. We also saw men fishing and making baskets for the offerings for the gods and children playing in the sea.
We continued to walk along the sea front before turning back and returning to the home stay. We chilled out here for an hour or so after our long walk before grabbing the lap top and heading to a café with Wi-Fi. We checked our e-mails and the news before going to Hardy's to shop. Hardy's is a huge store selling everything they sell on the main street stalls, but all at fixed price - so much easier! As we wandered around putting things in our basket we were constantly harassed by the sales assistants who wanted to 'make bill' for us. We were mightily confused by this as we hadn't finished shopping! We were also accosted by sunglass and watch sellers. It seems the hard sell is all they know here.
We were in our last area of the shop when one of the sales assistants told us we had to have a bill from each section as they were different concessions - now it made sense! Luckily most of our stuff had barcodes on so could be scanned - the idea of finding where it had all come from and getting a bill for each item was majorly daunting! We paid for our bits and left the shop happy with our purchases -a new bag, journal, earrings and bracelet for me, and some souvenirs for Jens and Nina who have kindly offered us a room in Singapore.
Back in the room after my shower I put on a dress and some make-up (getting really dressed up in travelling terms!) to mark the end of our holibobs in Sanur. We went out to a place we had been a few times, but somewhere we really enjoyed who served delicious local food! It didn't disappoint and we had a lovely evening.
Back in the room we packed our bags up for the first time in ages ready to move on to Ubud tomorrow! We have had a lovely holiday time here, but are both ready to move on and are excited about travelling again.
We woke up to the alarm for the first time in a week or so and after the usual check out routine, we ate breakfast and then made our way to the bus office.
Not the most exciting blog entry to read, but we hope you can see what a lovely time we had in Sanur :o) Miss you all lots and lots! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
