One week into our journey and we have now arrived in Bangkok, our third destination.
At first, we booked an overnight bus from Ao Nang, Krabi. Thought it would be good for the experience bla bla bla. But after speaking to a few travellers who told us a flight is almost as cheap (and no where near as long of course) we decided to book a flight instead and thankfully the lovely lady at August Venture gave us a full refund!! We should thank our lucky stars!
From the airport we chose to take the train to our hostel, Oldtown Hostel, instead of a taxi or tuk tuk and I'm so glad we did. Apart from the fact it was completely free (we can't help it if the ticket attendant refused to charge us, even when we insisted) it was a interesting experience. The train itself wasn't anything fancy, it was run down and dusty, the type you see in the old movies. I think we pretty much saw all aspects of Bangkok during that sole 30 minute journey. We passed by newly developed apartments, shanty towns, high rise offices, the highways, market stalls, a bit of greenery and even the locals chilling on the train tracks.
Since we booked the Oldtown Hostel I've been eagerly waiting to see it in the flesh and I must say it exceeded our expectations. This 3 month old hostel is so trendy and modern but yet so vintage. I love it! We both love it!
However my thoughts on sharing a 10 bed mixed dorm wasn't as positive. In fact it was the complete opposite. Having had no sleep the night before all I wanted to do was to have a quick shower and get straight into my bed. So it started off well - I had a nice warm shower (the I Krabi only had cold water). But then I didn't really know what to do. After my shower do I..
a) come out fully dressed
b) come out half dressed
c) come out wrapped with just a towel
What do I do?!?!
Next step was to take out my contact lenses. There are two people who appear to be sleeping so it's pitch dark in the room, my bedside light isn't working and so I'm practically doing everything in the dark. Why are the simple things in life not so simple anymore?!
To make things worse the room was freezing cold and so I had no choice but to get into bed with my hoodie on. I was extremely exhausted, freezing cold and constantly woken up by others who kept walking in and out of the room til early hours of the morning. It's only been 7 days and I'm feeling home sick already!
Ro's right, next time we need to ensure we arrive at a hostel during daylight hours.
We spent day 2 travelling via foot and MRT to our 2nd hostel - Take a Nap. Then travelling all the way back because it wasn't quite what we expected. As we sat in the room analysing the pros and cons of the new hostel we befriended an inspiring, super healthy and active 72 year old who told us "no journey is a waste". And with this in mind we walked back to the MRT station with a positive attitude. What also helped was getting a full refund for the 2 nights we booked at Take a Nap. Our luck might run out soon.
It was during this journey when I learnt how heavy 11kg really is. OMG! I expect to build great shoulder muscles by the end of this trip.
My second night back at the Oldtown Hostel, in a mixed dorm was great! I've shaken off the home sick feeling, met some interesting travellers and feel on top of the world again. Life is great, especially when you have no idea what day of the week you're on.
