The sun came out the morning we left Bundaberg and stayed out for our entire stay at the next stop, 1770. This tiny little place is a true gem and a great destination to relax. This part of the coast was where Captain Cook first landed in Queensland in 1770, hence the name and it turned out to be a great place for a history lesson for the kids.
The campground is out on a point, looking across a large inlet and river entrance, back towards the mainland. 1770 is one of the few places on the east coast where you can watch the sun set over water. Each evening we wandered down to the beach with our chairs and watched the sun go down.
We had booked a beachfront site where you can have fires however when we arrived, the site was only about 4 meters wide, was on wet, dirty sand and had tents and tarps either side with their guy ropes pushing into the small space in between. We quickly decided to move back a row onto the grassy area where we had sunlight, more space and still had water views.
Originally we'd planned 3 nights in 1770 but as the weather was just perfect and the kids were having such a great time at the beach, we kept delaying our departure. Conscious that this was the last surf beach and probably the last stinger free beach for a while, we relaxed and had 5 lazy days.
We went to either Workman's Beach or Town Beach most mornings and Lachie had a ball on his boogie board. Toby took him out way over his head and he got dumped a few times but just kept going back for more, he loved it! Gemma decided she loved duck diving so also went out deep looking for bigger and bigger waves and Neve enjoyed playing in the shallows. I'd forgotten how great it is when the waves are fun and the water is so warm you get out when you're tired, not when you're shivering!
We also spent a day in the nearby Deep Water National Park which had great beaches and beautiful rainforest. We probably should have moved in there for a couple of nights but were feeling too lazy to pack up and move! The kids particularly loved Flat Rock Beach which had a large deep channel between the beach and a rock platform about 5 metres out. The water rushed through the channel and the kids jumped in, were carried 20 metres down the beach then they climbed out and did it again and again!
The afternoons were spent kayaking, visiting the local museum and on another afternoon Toby, Neve and Lachie went fishing on a hired boat. Lachie enjoyed fishing until they actually caught something big enough to keep, then he cried his eyes out because Toby wouldn't let it go; now he knows why I don't like fishing.
Each morning Neve and I went for a walk and passed the pub on the corner admiring the view from the open balcony. Toby and I decided we should all have a drink there one afternoon which turned into dinner watching the sun set. Beautiful wine and great fish n chips made for a very pleasant evening, and in true Qld form we were home by 7pm!
