We got into Waitomo yesterday after a short bus ride from Auckland and went to book some caving.
The only thing to do in this town is caving, it has a grand population of 40! Its really a shop a hostel and some caves.
The minibus came and picked us up and we went to the centre and got suited up, wet suits and thermal shoes! We picked up our rubber rings and headed back to the minibus and then headed for the hills. Once we got to the place we had to walk about 10 minutes in our wetsuits and rubber rings through some woods. I felt like an idiot. Finally, we reached the caves and this is where the caving began! We went underground for an hour and sailed along in our rubber rings. The caves are famous for the presence of glowworms (the fungus gnat Arachnocampa luminosa) at one point we could turn our head torches off because there were so many glow worms they lit the whole cave up for us.
We got to do front flips down a waterfall while we were in there, we might a nice older couple from the UK, but now they live in San Fransisco. We floated out into the open woods again and had to hike back up the stairs to the bus.
I can't talk for long because I've got to catch a bus to Rototrua....
