Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
We left charming little Hoi An behind and headed for the beach resort of Nha Trang. After catching up on some sleep following our overnight bus journey we set out to book some scuba diving. The guys at the Rainbow were excellent and reassured me that I would be fine having not dived since our honeymoon - so we booked up and after hitting the beach we trudged back to our cell...sorry, hotel room for an early night.
We found ourselves the next morning on a boat heading out to the surrounding islands, having a refresher course in diving from a lovely Scottish guy. Steve "Master Diver" Stocks remembered all of it but I was a tad on the nervous side and needed a bit more prompting. It felt completely alien to have all that equipment on again and having to throw yourself off the boat was just plain ridiculous with a big tank on your back and a weight belt around your waist; and of course I had the usual dramatic thoughts - what if the air doesn't work, what if I get lost, what if a big shark comes and swallows me?
Steve was cool as a cucumber of course and after having to perform some key skills under the sea, I managed to control my breathing and flapping arms and settled into it. It was really great swimming through the coral and seeing the sea life that the guide pointed out. Steve was on his own fish-finding mission and spotted some cool things and before we knew it we were surfacing.
The second dive was much better as we were completely relaxed and able to have a better look around. The only thing is that getting back in the water has added more fuel to Steve's plan to train as a diving instructor - maybe this scheme has more potential than selling dodgy memory cards on ebay!
We met up with Carly and Blair (fellow travellers from Oz/NZ) and went to a place called Crazy Kim's - Kim is a lady who works to stop child paedophilia in Vietnam and she is in the process of building a school behind the bar for street kids to attend during the day. There were some very drunk Japanese guys in the bar which was great as they bought everyone there a drink - not sure if they will be too merry the following morning when they look in their wallets!
The next day we rented a motorcycle and weaved our way through the streets to get to Thap Ba Hot Spring Center. We spent several hours of indulgence soaking in a pool of hot mineral-rich mud, hot springs and massaging waterfalls....aah, life's tough!
