Bangkok or as the Thais call it, "City of Angels" is yet another shock on the senses although it will have to go a long way to beat Delhi for completely flooring us! It is unbelievably hot and not in a nice way - air con is yet again the only saving grace and stops you from completely drowning in a pool of your own perspiration. We have subsequently splashed out on a room and spent US$10 for the essential addition of air con. We orientated ourselves with Khao San Road which was just backpacker city. There was stall after stall of imitation goods - basically whatever you want they have. People were getting their hair braided and dreadlocked; Pad Thai was cooked by numerous vendors and tuk-tuk drivers did the usual touting for business. There are definitely lots of characters here in Bangkok, the most interesting being the lady-boys....the heels, nails and hair are so impressive and would put us women to shame at times! After meeting up with Carly the following morning we left Steve and Blair behind and headed for an hour of indulgence in the form of a full body massage....it was pure bliss and there will definitely be more of these on the agenda as we head to south Thailand. After meeting Carly and Blair's friends from home and some others who we had met on the bus from the airport we headed for some evening entertainment Bangkok style. The 3 tuk-tuks we hired raced through the streets - with the promise of a generous tip for the winners - which was highly entertaining. Although this was not the highlight of our evening....this was to be Patpong. Without going into too much detail, and to put it in its politest form for the children reading this, it was go-go dancing with added ping pong balls, darts, marker pens, razor blades etc etc. I'll leave the rest up to your own imaginations.......an interesting, if a tad strange, evening was had by all but apparently its a must see ADULT attraction in Bangkok!
