Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Yep, you guessed it, we went diving again on a liveaboard for 5 days. This time it was in the Komodo national park area, where it is one of the best diving spots in the world! This is due to two oceans meeting at this area around the islands, although it can cause some quite scary currents a times.
We chartered a lovely boat when we first got to Labaunbajo, run by an Italian (Ricardo) and a Polish lady (Alexandra). We were to be their first customers as they were nearly finished in the refurbishment of the fishing boat they had bought a year ago and they needed a couple more days to organise the final touches. Although we were the only customers aboard, they had invited another couple (A german and his Indonesean wife) along from another boat, to supply all the diving equipment.
The diving was indeed some of the best we have ever encountered with so much to see and take in. Although the highlight for me was when we had just finished a dive and had got back on board the boat, a whole group of mantas surrounded the boat. So quickly I put on my mask and jumped back in. In total there must have been 15 mantas circling me and although they are harmless I was a little scared on my own with all these fish (which are 3-4 metres wide and 4-5 metres long) coming right up to me to take a look at what was in the water with them.
Things back onboard the boat however were starting to get a little edgey, as the German guy was actually a boardline alcoholic and basically made everyone on edge as he had drunk all the beer that had been bought for us. This however didn't spoil it for us (just a little dampener), although we had to feel sorry for Ricardo and Alexandra who were doing there best to make it an enjoyable first trip.
We also stopped off at Komodo island to go see the dragons, which up close are a little scary knowing one bite from them and its all over. The one we saw however was just sun bathing by the islands kitchen waiting for hand outs. He had obviously decided not to waste energy running around the forest after deer and buffalo and stay put waiting for a free lunch.
At the end of the 5 days we returned to Labaunbajo where the German and his wife disembarked with a few final cutting remarks (I must point out his wife was a lovely woman who always did her best to help out the whole journey), I don't think they will be speaking to each other in the near future. We stayed onboard for one extra night to avoid the mosquitos of the mainland and have a good nights sleep before saying goodbye to Ricardo and Alexandra and flying back to Bali the next day.
