Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
With our morning of trekking up Gunung Batur behind us we headed back to the east coast to the tiny village of Amed. It is very quiet here with just one road straight in and out and doesn't see that many visitors. It is a pretty place with lots of coloured fishing boats moored up on the beach and the almost obligatory white sand and the bluest of seas. The main draw is the diving although it is a great place to just sit and do very little.
We found a lovely place to stay with great views over the bay and an outdoor bathroom! The family who shared the ownership of the bungalows were really friendly and went well out of their way to ensure our stay was great. They took turns to sit and talk with us each night and were so interested in our home towns. We beat them at cards then they returned the favour by beating us....Steve was invited into the kitchen to watch them prepare a traditional Balinese dish of fish satay which we then cooked on an open fire outside - it was delicious so hopefully Steve will remember how to make it although some of the ingredients did not translate into English very well! Steve even got up at 2am to watch a Premiership football match in the family house....I was invited but felt that my beauty sleep was far more important!
We did some diving (surprisingly enough) and I completed my advanced open water course. My navigation skills left a lot to be desired and I asked my instructor if I could repeat the compass exercise as I felt like a complete idiot not being able to navigate a square! He passed me luckily so my next mission is to become a rescue diver like Scuba Steven!
The diving was good and seeing the wreck of the US cargo ship "Liberty", which was bombed during WWII was a great experience. Swimming inside it was like being in an underwater cathedral with the sun beaming through the wreck of the large cabin. There were tons of fish and coral and some big turtles which are always great to see.
We are off to Padangbai next to get the ferry over to Lombok and then onto the Gili Islands for even more diving...seriously, I think we are starting to grow gills and will soon become fully fledged fish - either that or diving nerds!
