After our time in Petra we headed farther south to Wadi Rum. Here we took a 4wd out to check out the desert it is spectacular there is multi colored sand, sand dunes, mountains and Bedouin (desert people) herding camels and goats throughout. After a few hours of exploring we stopped to watch the sunset. We really didn't think the desert could be so pretty. That night we stayed in a Bedouin camp (put on for tourists). They usually have belly dancers and Bedouin dancing but there were only 10 people at the camp. The lack of tourists is due to the instability of the Middle East. Jordan has seen a lot of tourism cancellations even though the country is very safe. Jordanians love their King and would never revolt against him.
After our sleep at the camp we headed towards the Dead Sea and the city of Aqaba. This is the area in Jordan where you can see the Saudi Border crossing, Egypt and Israel. Unfortunately our time there was short but we had a chance to snorkel in the crystal clear waters and relax in the sun. We had dinner at a restaurant recommended by our driver. We arrived at the place and were told they didn't have an english menu. We asked them to bring us something good. We were brought a whole tableful of food which was amazing and all for less than $10. While we were eating a rock fight broke out in the street. Grown men were throwing rocks and concrete at each other. It was quite amusing to watch.
After Aqaba we drove to Amman and time to say goodbye to Jordan. About 8 hours before we left we discovered that our flight to Cairo had been cancelled. This began the frantic organization to find another means of transport to Berlin. In the end we actually got a better flight to Berlin...we just didn't get any sleep that night.
We really loved Jordan there is so much history and amazing places to see. The people are extremely friendly and the country is safe. It is too bad Jordan is such a long flight from Canada!
