Ok, so today was interesting. I got going pretty late for who knows what reason. I checked out and stashed my bags in the storage room at the hostel, then headed over to the station wih cheese in hand, intent on taking a quick trip over to Wandsbek to drop it off. The next available train was just before 11. Brilliant thinks I, I'll load up the bike and take it over there with me (I have already bought a return ticket, may as well use it.)
So I load up properly, get over to the platform and wait. And wait some more. This train clearly isn't coming and as the board is up a level and my eyesight isn't Superman fantastic as to see why I leave and decide to cycle there instead. Not in the plan but I'll leave from there instead, no biggie, the GPS will see me right. This turned out to be quite a nice little cross town trek.
Had a look around the doorway and decided the best place to leave the cheese was in a shady spot near the door. Um and arr. Move position of cheese. Text Rob. Walking down driveway the landlord's wife opens the window and enquires what I am doing there. In my best hack German I try to tell her I'm leaving something for Rob. I'm pretty sure the only thing that she understood was Herr Yeowell. Then she said "he's not here"(this I knew) and 'coming' and shut the window. Great. Now I went to the front door armed to try and explain this situation ie give her the cheese and point at their door. It was Siggy who opened the door which was both a surprise and a relief I can tell you! Cheese delivered, cold drink had, quick hello to Rob who also happened to return home at that point too and then I was off. Deadline of 18:00 when my host for the evening had to leave.
Stopped at the local bike shop for sunnies (for keeping midgies and such from flying into your eyes a speed when you're cycling) and a holder for my phone - am yet to fit. Then I was off to Mölln - in the wrong direction as I discovered 1 mile later. Rats. Turn round and burn rubber.
A fairly hilly route, but thankfully the hills were doable with 4 gears. I really pushed to get up and there. Beautiful route with lots of wheat fields, most with purple field flowers in, giving them a bit of a hazey look at times, some just wheat as far as you could see - kilometres long! Nice amount of shade too. Lots of horses to gaze as well. I only walked up two hills at the very end when my legs would take no more hills at a panicked push. But I made the deadline. Just. 17:56 to be precise. Met my absentee host who showed me his flat and helped get my bike into the basement before shooting off for the weekend. Lovy clean feeling flat. Very tastefully Ikea furnished all round - way cleaner than I would expect a guy's flat to be! A quick walk to the local supermarket for dinne and then I vegitated in front of the TV till I flopped into bed.
So not the most exciting day but it was a good start with 40 miles covered.
