Right, finally found a decent computer so here we go, my first blog post...
Day 1
Our trip could not have started any better. We had been on the plane to Hong Kong no longer than 20 mins before making friends with a lovely Australian couple called Jill and Mike. They have been touring around Europe and the US in Mike's beloved Austin-Healey and were stopping off in Hong Kong for a few days before making their way back to Melbourne. Anyway, fast forward a couple of hours, throw in some excellent conversation and a few free beverages, courtesy of British Airways, and we find ourselves the grateful recipients of an invite to stay at their place when we get to Oz, with the promise of tickets to a cricket match at the MCG and maybe a trip to the Australian Tennis Open too. The best thing about this story is that Mike sounds exactly like Bruce, the shark from Finding Nemo.
Leaving the airport on a high after meeting Jill and Mike, we headed to our hotel in Sha Tin (yes, yes, I know we are supposed to be travelling but we're easing ourselves in, ok?!) to find that we had been given a free upgrade with a fantastic view. So it was high fives all round and then off to the mall to have a look around, We stood out. Big time.
After feeling sufficiently out of place we jumped on the subway down to Tsim Sha Tsui, which is down by the waterfront, to catch the light show that happens every night at 8pm. I snapped away like a young David Bailey for about an hour and am now the proud owner of several hundred photos of the Hong Kong sky line, each one indistinguishable from the next. Following that masterstroke we walked along the Avenue of Stars (Hong Kong's version of Hollywood Boulevard) and then back in to town for our first experience of authentic Chinese cuisine. Homemade fishball with noodles and soup was the dish. Two thumbs up was the verdict.
Tired, stuffed and satisfied with our day's achievements, we retired to our room in anticipation of a big adventure ahead.
Day one...done.
